You showed up

I’m often asked, “How’s it going, moving couches and stuff?” Fair question. A couch is a good gift when your living room is empty. And carrying it through the door can be a powerful way to say, “I’m here. I care about you.”

We recently brought a mother and her children a living room full of furniture, a dining table, some kitchen items, a few toys for the kiddos, and some things for the baby on the way. We showed up at her doorstep with a truckload and knocked. As we shared stories, talked about some of our struggles, and prayed together, an ordinary living room became a sacred space. It was the beginning of a relationship.

In a moment of gratitude, she told us,

“I called everyone I could think of…nothing was working, but you showed up.”

The truth is, we can’t show up for everyone. But when God gives us the chance, it’s a great honor. The miracle of couches and stuff is that by showing up for someone, we get to demonstrate, as best we can, Christ’s present, transformative love…and give them something to sit on.
